An immigrant child's perspective
“For a person who has not had much time living in San Jose, or in any part of the world, he is first a stranger. Everything is new for him; the streets, the parks, especially the language. I am also one of these people. Everything is different from where I come from.
In this school, there are many kids who are new. Some have been living here in San Jose and don’t speak English for...

Spirit Week re-cap
Last week my team held a spirit week for the students at the school where we serve complete with a dodgeball tournament, students vs. teachers soccer game, carnival and a glow stick dance party that ultimately ended with one of my fellow corps members and I getting pied in the face.
Sounds like an awesome week, right?
It totally was. Here are a few photos from the carnival…

Revisiting Goals
Since there is only about a month left of my corps year, I thought I would revisit the goals I set for myself after Advanced Training Academy in February.
1. Hit our recruitment numbers: We were not able to hit the numbers, but we were able to keep our grant because my team showed vast improvements in our efforts and success in recruiting students. (I’ll check this one off as...

Wedding
Here are a few of my favorite pictures from my cousin’s wedding… it was on Petit Jean Mountain in Arkansas.
Dominique and her sons Jasper and Nicholas
Samantha, Jessi, Dominique and me.
Dominique and her (new) husband, Heath.

Rules of (dis) engagement
*Typically I only write about my service, but I’ve been itching to address a certain topic for awhile now, so just bear with me this once.
It seems like every time I go to click on a friend’s Facebook page from high school or college, their relationship has gone from “In a Relationship” to “Engaged” or even “Married.” Of course I am happy for these...
Change… Starts Here.

Teach.
Inspire.

Encourage.

To my mother
This is the first time in my life that I haven’t been with my mother for Mother’s Day. It is probably a good thing though because we usually always end up fighting for some silly reason on Mother’s Day for reasons unbeknownst to me. Guess I crack under the pressure of knowing I’m supposed to be nicer than usual and make it “special” somehow. Meh, whatever.

I serve with...
I was looking through my posts today and came upon my “I am From” poem that I had written during ATA with Charlie Rose. It inspired me to look back on my service and reflect in the same format (with a few adjustments).
I encourage you to plug in your own answers and take a look at your service. It definitely brought back a few memories for me.

Copa re-cap
“The flying soccer balls scratched clean, white arcs against the morning sky. Melting ice glistened in a bucket full of water bottles. And from one end of the San Jose playing field to the other, a pinball blur of pint-sized soccer players turned Saturday into a symphony of squealed delight.
It was impossible to tell who was having more fun - the grade-schoolers from underserved East-side...
